Improved CalDAV Syncing Algorithm

Alex Tselegidis

With the release of the most anticipated Easy!Appointments version to date, CalDAV Syncing became a built-in feature that will allow you to sync with your favorite external calendar service. Many community members have rushed in and tested the feature and provided useful feedback. The upcoming revision release will ship with various improvements related to the CalDAV Syncing Algorithm.

Supporting Private CalDAV

Firstly, private email hosting services often include CalDAV calendar support, enabling users to manage and synchronize calendars across devices while retaining control over their data. CalDAV is an open standard protocol that allows users to store and access calendar information on a remote server, ensuring seamless integration with calendar apps on devices like smartphones, tablets, and computers. By hosting email and CalDAV services privately, users or organizations can maintain greater privacy, as their data is stored on self-managed or trusted third-party servers rather than with large, commercial providers.

A lot of time the software that runs behind these services slightly differs from the official CalDAV protocol and as such, some fine-tuning was required in Easy!Appointments. Thanks to the great community support, we were able to spot all the inconsistencies and make sure the events sync smoothly between the connected systems.

Supporting Nextcloud CalDAV

Nextcloud is an open-source, self-hosted platform for file sharing, collaboration, and cloud storage. It allows individuals, organizations, and businesses to maintain full control over their data by hosting it on their own servers, rather than relying on third-party services. Nextcloud offers features similar to popular cloud services like Google Drive and Dropbox, including file syncing, sharing, versioning, and access from various devices. Additionally, it provides collaboration tools such as document editing, calendar and contact management, and video conferencing, which can be extended through a wide range of plugins and apps.

Nextcloud has its own calendar feature that supports exposing event information via the CalDAV protocol, but in a slightly different way than Baikal. This might have caused some inconsistencies that are now addressed and therefore the Nextcloud integration will now be excellent.

About the Upcoming Release

PHP 8.4 will soon become available and as such, Easy!Appointments will be getting a revision update that contains all the compatibility changes required for this upgrade. Along with the PHP support, the enhanced CalDAV Syncing will also be part of this relase, so make sure you follow the project for future release updates.
